Bashar al-Jaafari: Syrian Authorities Seize My Properties in Damascus

Former Syrian ambassador to Russia, Bashar al-Jaafari, announced that Syrian authorities have seized his real estate properties in Damascus, describing this action as "flagrant political revenge."

In a statement posted on social media platforms, al-Jaafari reported that elements affiliated with the security forces in Damascus arbitrarily and illegally took possession of his properties located in the Qara neighborhoods and Qudsayya suburb. He indicated that these properties had been owned officially for over twenty years, including his family home, which he purchased in 2002 after his assignment to Indonesia, and another house in Qudsayya that was bought in installments during his tenure as ambassador to the United Nations.

Al-Jaafari affirmed that this behavior could only be described as an act of political revenge, considering that what happened represents an unjust deprivation of a Syrian citizen's fundamental rights. He pointed out that this constitutes a violation of the principle of the sanctity of private property, as stipulated in both national constitutions and divine laws, as well as in the international bill of human rights.

He also mentioned that the seizure of his properties cannot be separated from similar occurrences in coastal regions, the Ghab plain, and the western countryside of Hama, where people's properties have become vulnerable to seizure and violation under various pretexts. He stressed that it is unacceptable to label those who defended their country with awareness and belonging as "remnants of the regime," pointing to the necessity of the rule of law and questioning where this law is when armed individuals enter the homes of Syrians.

In a related context, al-Jaafari denied last week reports about his application for asylum in Russia, asserting that this information is "absolutely false" and expressing his astonishment at its origin.

The Syrian embassy in Moscow had previously issued a statement denying circulating news about the end of al-Jaafari's mission and his transfer to the central administration in Damascus. This denial came after an unofficial post from the embassy's channel on the Telegram application, raising doubts about the accuracy of the information presented.
